The National office of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation has named Detroit as one of 11 national demonstration sites for its Building Sustainable Communities program.

Because of this, LISC has awarded Detroit LISC a 2007 grant of $100,000 to its current Neighborhoods NOW initiative.

Nonprofit Detroit LISC serves as an intermediary channeling financial and technical support to the Detroit-area community and seeks to build sustainable communities that transform distressed neighborhoods into healthy ones, offering them technical assistance, project financing, operating support, and training.

LISC's national program defines sustainable communities as places where it works with community partners engaged in pursuing five program goals over the next five years: expand capital investment in housing and real estate development; increase family income, wealth and employment; stimulate local economic activity and connect to the regional economy; improve access to quality education; and support healthy environment and lifestyles. The other cities are: Duluth, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Minneapolis-St Paul, Washington D.C., the San Francisco Bay area, rural Pennsylvania, and the state of Rhode Island.

"In June, LISC President and CEO Michael Rubinger spoke at our Neighborhoods NOW event when we unveiled over $100 million in neighborhood plans. In his speech he gave his support to the community groups and their strategic investment strategies. We are excited now to receive this generous grant which will support their efforts," says Deborah Younger, program director, Detroit LISC.
