No beating about the Bush over Alaska

So once again, American politics takes precedence over American common sense and we find that the Republican party is hell-bent on plundering the country's coastal oil reserves, regardless of future needs. Didn't Barbara Bush ever teach her boy the wisdom of saving for a rainy day? Of course, George W. Bush has no interest in the welfare of future generations - his turnabout has more to do with here-and-now popularity than anything else.

For too long, America has existed in a fcomfort blanket when it came to gasoline prices - every trip to the grocery store around the block required firing up the 4WD gas guzzler - but times they are a'changing. Now that inland oil reserves are being exhausted and prices at the gas pump are soaring, presidential eyes are turning to coastal waters and - worst of all the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge - the environment takes second place.

There are few unspoilt areas on our planet and we must preserve those we have. George Bush's long-held belief that the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is ripe for exploitation should leave the White House with him in November.
