Tyson Foods Inc. closes its processing plant in York, Nebraska, becoming the latest U.S. food processor to streamline its business.

The Springdale, Arkansas company announced the consolidation of the plant in a statement on Friday.

The closure of the plant, which produces uncooked meats such as flat iron steak and other sliced beef for retail and foodservice customers, will result in the loss of 110 jobs.

Employees at the plant will continue to receive pay and benefits through June 17, Tyson said.

Improving efficiency

The company says it will shift production from the York plant to its Emporia, Kansas, plant which will improve efficiency.

“Given the dynamics of the meat business, we must continually pursue ways to operate more efficiently,” said Roy Slaughter, vice president of Poultry and Prepared Foods Operations for Tyson. “After careful consideration, we have decided it will be more efficient for another, larger operation to absorb the work done at York.”
