NAHB has named Joy Herlong, director of affordable housing compliance for S.L. Nusbaum Realty Company, as HCCP of the Year.
Joy Herlong was realized for her success in managing more than 10,000 affordable apartment homes in Virginia Beach, Va. The award, presented annually, recognizes superior achievement among the specialized expertise of affordable housing professionals who hold the National Association of Home Builders’ (NAHB) Housing Ceritified Credit Professional (HCCP) designation.
The HCCP designation is a specialized professional designation from NAHB for developers, property managers, asset managers and others working in the Low Income Housing Tax Credit Industry industry. Passing the HCCP test requires proficiency in all areas of the building industry, from development to regulation compliance.
“The HCCP of the Year award recognizes an individual that has demonstrated the highest level of commitment and achievement in the affordable housing industry,” says Bruce Corb, principal of compliance at MMA Financial, LLC and chairman of the board which oversees the HCCP designation program. “Joy has devoted her career to helping to expand affordable housing opportunities and has shown great dedication to her own residents, so we are very proud to recognize her for these significant contributions.”
The Low Income Housing Tax Credit program is the most effective affordable housing development program in history and has resulted in the creation of more than one million affordable housing units. Using the program to develop affordable housing—and staying in compliance with all applicable regulations—requires specialized skills and expertise. The HCCP designation represents the highest standard of knowledge, experience and education in the industry. It is the premier nationally endorsed credential for Low-Income Housing Tax professionals.
Herlong has been active in the affordable housing industry for her entire career. Before working for S.L. Nusbaum, Herlong was an auditor at National Housing Corp. in Virginia Beach, Va. in their Tax Credit Department.
“I’m truly honored to receive this award,” Herlong says. “The everyday work of housing credit professionals is very important not just to those within the housing industry, but to the state of affordable housing in this country as a whole.”
