IEA receives International Star Award

The International Energy Agency (IEA) will receive the International Star of Energy Efficiency award.

This award is from the Alliance to Save Energy for the Agency's globally supported analysis and promotion of energy efficiency. In 2006 and 2007, IEA presented a total of 16 recommendations to the G8 Summit. The total energy savings potential of these recommendations could equal 6,279 million metric tons of saved carbon dioxide per year.

IEA Executive Director Claude Mandil welcomes this award, “It acknowledges the efforts the IEA has made to raise the profile of energy efficiency in balanced energy policies”.

The backbone of IEA energy-efficiency analysis is a global assessment of end uses, including recommendations such as an accelerated phase out of incandescent light bulbs; broader international cooperation on the development and implementation of energy efficiency standards in appliances, automobiles and buildings; and application of a 1-watt standard for standby power. The creation of an "Energy Efficiency Policies and Measures Database" is another significant part of IEA work on energy efficiency. A second database highlighting climate change policies promotes energy efficiency as the centerpiece of IEA recommendations for climate change mitigation policies and measures.

In 2005, the IEA launched its G8 Gleneagles Program focusing on climate change, clean energy, and sustainable development. This program provides a framework for action on energy efficiency at every level in countries around the world. The IEA is identifying best policy practice in codes and standards across various sectors, drawing lessons that are applicable both in IEA member countries, but also elsewhere and in particular in Russia and in the five large countries which have been associated to the G8 decisions such as the Heiligendamm process: China, India, Mexico, Brazil, South Africa. The IEA acts as an advisor on energy policy to 26 member countries in their efforts to ensure clean, reliable, and affordable energy for their citizens while maintaining energy security, economic development, and environmental protection.

Every year, the Alliance to Save Energy recognizes deserving companies and individuals for their outstanding commitment and contributions to energy efficiency. This year for the 30th year anniversary, the Star of Energy Efficiency Award will be given on 20th September in Washington, D.C.
