Lawyers tackle key fundamentals at conference

Immigration and business law, healthcare fraud and abuse, and business courts are the key topics to be addressed at the ABA Young Lawyers Division Fall Conference.

About 300 of the nation’s leading young lawyers are expected to convene in “The Queen City” to examine these important issues as well as network, exchange ideas at the Young Bar Leader Summit, to take place on Oct. 4-6 at the Charlotte Marriott City Center in Charlotte, N.C., engage in workshops and participate in Wills for Heroes, the ABA YLD 2007-2008 public service project providing free estate planning documents to local first responders.

Some conference highlights include:

Oct. 5

“International Law 101: Immigration and Business Law” panelists Jacqueline Bares and Steve Hader, both of Charlotte, N.C., will explain immigration and business law fundamentals, focusing on employment immigration matters and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act from 9:45 – 10:45 a.m.

“Healthcare Fraud and Abuse Basics: Keeping Your Clients Out of Jail” will present a basic overview of federal laws concerning healthcare fraud and abuse, including the Anti-Kickback Statute and Stark Law practical tips on identifying key issues early. William W. Horton of Birmingham, Ala. is slated to present this program from 11 a.m. – noon.

“Luncheon: 60 Sites in 60 Minutes” will provide a rapid-fire presentation of essential web resources by top legal technologists from 1:15 – 2:15 p.m. Panelists will include Debbie Foster, founder and president, InTouch Legal, Largo, Fla.; Blair Janis, Jordan, Utah; and Adriana Linares, legal technology trainer, LawTech Partners, Orlando, Fla.

“An Introduction to Business Courts” will give an overview of the development of business courts nationally, as well as valuable and practical information about creating new business courts and practicing before them. Panelists will include C. Darnell Jones, II, president judge of the Court of Common Pleas, First Judicial District of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia; Merrick Gross, Shareholder, Akerman Senterfitt, Miami; Mitchell Bach, Philadelphia; and Robert Fuller, Charlotte, N.C. This program is slated to occur from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.

Oct. 6

“Young Bar Leader Summit: The Next Generation and Bar Leadership Programming” will create a forum for ABA YLD affiliate leaders to discuss issues facing their bar groups. Training sessions regarding the development of future bar leaders, a diversity plan and an annual report will also be an integral part of the program. The summit is slated to occur from 8 a.m. – 2:15 p.m.
