When reading off a list of M.C. Dean’s diverse amount of services, large geographic market and wide range of customers it is hard to not be impressed. The company is a nationwide leader in engineering and integration providers for complex electrical, electronic, and telecommunication systems.

Few companies in the engineering and integration industry can claim it services as many sectors as M.C. Dean. According to the company website, the Dulles, Virginia-based company works with several Fortune 1000 companies, universities, high tech and biotech firms and local government clients; and other organizations with large scale, complex, and mission-critical infrastructure needs.

The same competing organizations might have trouble matching M.C. Dean’s enormous employee base and wide geographical influence. The company employs 2,500 dedicated professionals and has annual revenue of US$500 million. Along with the Dulles headquarters, it has 22 offices across the US, Europe and the Middle East. M.C. Dean’s wide range of services includes: Design-Build, energy, communications, security/life safety and automation. To put it simply: M.C. Dean has it all.

DESIGN-BUILD

More than anything M.C. Dean relies on its superior design-build services. Research indicates that nearly all of the company’s business is design-build. Not only does design-build allow M.C. Dean a better understanding of potential problems, it comes with enhanced vendor support.

According to the company website, M.C. Dean’s design-build service features, “corporate structure enabling client solutions through concept and construction to operations and maintenance.” Experienced professionals possessing extensive engineering, design computer networking, design and integration, CADD, cost analysis, and project management knowledge are responsible for the M.C. Dean design-build team says the website.

“This team works with clients, equipment vendors, architects, and product manufacturers to formulate design concepts that meet and exceed clients’ expectations. Beyond this, project engineers work closely with the construction team to ensure design credibility. The company’s multiple divisions lend discipline-specific expertise and seasoned engineers to the design process. M.C. Dean Inc’s exceptional field staff offers years of systems construction experience,” it explains on the website.

OTHER SERVICES

Along with design-build, M.C. Dean offers comprehensive energy services as well. Included in its capabilities for energy services are power systems construction, critical power and power systems testing and maintenance.

“M.C. Dean Inc offers the industry’s most comprehensive package of Energy Services, drawing from over fifty years of experience in the design, construction and maintenance of all levels of power systems. This extensive experience enables us to provide system solutions to clients of all sizes and complexity,” says the website.

In addition to energy, there is communications, security/life safety and automation. Communications includes the installation and/or distribution of fiber optic communications, voice and data networks, network management, information systems and network security.

“The diversity of our experience allows us to address a multitude of specialized areas within the fields of security and electronic systems,” the company says of its saftey segment.

The security segment includes installation of detection systems, access control systems, closed circuit TV, sound and audio/visual systems, criminal justice facility security systems and life security systems. Finally in automation, M.C. Dean’s subsidiary CIM according to the website is the premier designer, integrator, and programmer of automation controls for production and operations environments.

EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY

One of the most important aspects of M.C. Dean is its outreach in education for employees as well as local students. For instance, it offers a top-notch electrical apprenticeship program. This four-year program teaches potential candidates to become licensed Journeymen Electricians. “Through this program, M.C. Dean Inc currently teaches, trains, mentors, and provides on-the-job experience to more than 150 apprentices,” it says on the website.

However, this is not the only program of its type involving M.C. Dean. In addition to the apprenticeship program, M.C. Dean also offers a merit-based scholarship to employees looking to continue their education. The website indicates recipients of the US$5,000 are chosen based on “existing job performance, evaluation scores, supervisor feedback, and a narrative summary of how the degree will positively affect their performance and the company’s business results.”

Not only are there employee benefit education programs, but M.C. Dean offers programs for students in the Washington D.C. area. These programs, including the apprenticeship offering, promote students to enter the industry in an entry level capacity. Considering that 90 percent of its employees come in at an entry level status, this approach seems to work for the company.

The website says this type of community service, which also includes help to small businesses and minorities, is essential to its success. “M.C.
