Founded in 1905, Sundyne Corporation today designs, manufactures and supports industrial pump and compressor products for the process fluid industries. A global enterprise, the company has manufacturing facilities in the United States, England, France, Germany and a joint venture in Japan. This means it is well positioned to solve the challenges facing its global customers.
As the corporate website puts it, ‘Syndyne’s products serve the worldwide hydrocarbon and chemical processing, pulp and paper, power generation and the food and beverage markets. Aftermarket services include spare parts, overhaul and repair and engineering and technical support.’ All in all, a comprehensive service.
Business operations
A division of Hamilton Sundstrand, Sundyne has over 700 employees, 300 of which work outside the US. These employees are divided across three business operations – pumps, compressors and service and parts – each designed to offer unrivaled technology and service to a wide variety of customers.
Typically used in the refining, chemical, offshore, pharmaceutical, prepared food, beverage, meat, poultry and general manufacturing industries, Sundyne’s pump products are recognized names, leading the way in specialty pump engineering and services for the process industries. Customers range from the recognized names of the Fortune 500 to those small companies looking to gain a competitive edge in their marketplace.
Sundyne Compressor customers are pretty much the same, and read like a who’s who of the Fortune 500. Typically used in the gas processing, natural gas, offshore, refining, petrochemical, chemical and power generation industries, Sundyne’s compressors lead the way in value added reliability.
As if this were not enough, Sundyne also has a full range of aftermarket support services for its international clients. As its corporate website says ‘our business objective and service level agreement is to deliver a trouble-free customer experience with Sundyne products, provide our business partners with an industry-leading aftermarket competency for Sundyne products and solutions, and maximize (protect) the customer’s total cost of ownership.’ As a result, the forward-thinking company helps customers reduce cost, improve up-time and assert a competitive advantage.
Supporting Arvada
Headquartered in Arvada, Colorado (12 miles from Denver, CO), Sundyne’s mission is to be the supplier of choice for specialty drives, pumps and compressors.
Despite being a global company whose products are shipped to all corners of the world, Sundyne’s reach is more local for the city of Arvada. Sundyne is committed to supporting its local community, and in fact employs around 350 people in Arvada – and most live in the city or the surrounding area.
Sundyne produces pumps and compressors for natural gas, chemical processing, food processing and other applications and although it’s more likely their heavy equipment will be shipped to oil refineries or factories across the country and world, it remains committed to its roots.
Sundyne’s large employee base and manufacturing power makes a big impact on the local economy. Staying in Arvada instead of pulling up stakes for a larger facility elsewhere is something to be admired. Sundyne remains committed to the local area and has made numerous investments in expanding manufacturing there.
Continuous improvement
Sundyne is renowned for its ability to solve problems – creating many new patents and satisfying customers around the globe. To offer an example of this, in February, Sundyne introduced a new bearing box design for its line of heavy duty Sundyne API Direct Drive Process Pumps. The bearing box, which meets the API 610/ISO 13709 Type OH3 requirements, is available in Grease Lube, Oil Splash and Oil Mist configurations.
Bearing boxes are typically used to isolate drive units from high temperatures and loads, allowing mounting of Standard IEC, NEMA and special certified motors. This design is available as standard equipment on all Sundyne LMV-800 series pumps.
Jeff Wiemelt, vice president and general manager of Sundyne Corp., says the new bearing box is “simple and rugged, making our Sundyne Heavy Duty API Direct Drive pumps even more reliable. This upgrade represents our commitment and investment in continuous product improvement.”
Shawn Olson, Sundyne Corp.’s pumps business unit manager adds: “We have placed more then 70 bearing boxes on Sundyne Heavy Duty API Direct Drive pumps at customer sites over the past year, and they have all performed flawlessly. Engineers in hydrocarbon processing units chemical processors will be pleased with the enhanced reliability and ease of maintenance that these products provide.”
The improved Grease Lube bearing box and new Oil Splash bearing box are available in six configurations and rated up to 100 horsepower (75 kW), 1100 psig (76 bar) and 300°F (150°C). All Sundyne bearings have an L10 life of 25,000 hours minimum to meet or exceed API 610/ISO 13709 requirements.
Performing well
Serving customers in over 117 countries, supported by a vastly experienced network of representatives and distributors, Sundyne’s 2007 revenues were $5.6 billion– a great success.
With specialty process pumps and compressors engineered with the highest standards for reliability, safety and durability, Sundyne’s products are at the leading-edge and designed to run efficiently and reliably. What’s more, with comprehensive service integrated with business insight, Sundyne is able to reduce costs and improve up-time –solving the challenges facing its global customers.
