In an effort to save energy Utah-state employees will get Fridays off.
Because of the downturn in the economy and US$4 a gallon gasoline, the state of Utah has opted to compress the work week.
From next month state employees will end their working week on a Thursday.
It is hoped this will reduce the state's energy costs and commuters’ gasoline expenses.
The move will affect thousands of government employees who will put in 10 hour days, Monday through Thursday, and then have Fridays off. Pay will not be affected.
The order was issued by Republican Governor Jon Huntsman however the change will not cover state police officers, prison guards or employees of the courts or Utah's public universities.
Officials will evaluate the program after a year and decide whether to extend it.
