Now 2007 is buried under a pile of sad-looking tinsel, we look at two of the products that will still be going strong well into the New Year.

VUDU

“There are very few in consumer electronics that truly understand how to build a product that will ‘wow’ the customer. This is one of those teams.”

When Benchmark Capital, investors in eBay and Facebook among countless others, makes a statement like this, people tend to prick up their ears.

So it’s no surprise that the VUDU, a box and service that delivers instant access to thousands of movies directly through the TV, has been a runaway success. Sure, at $400 (plus rental charges of around $5 per film) it’s a little steep, but VUDU’s masterstrokes included getting every major studio on board (no mean feat, of course) and offering movies in high-def, the latter finding it many supporters in those wishing to skip the format war. If you’re one of these, or just too lazy to visit the rental store, this could be the perfect buy.

Pre-loading the 8GB version of the massively popular N95 with Spiderman 3 was a way of Nokia hammering home the point that the new 2.8 inch screen was perfect for video. And to be fair, it is. But where this handheld multimedia computer (the Finnish giant has been understandably reluctant to call it a mobile phone) really comes into its own is web browsing, where it outperforms nearly everything on the market.

The $750 dollar price tag and the lack of a touch screen has stopped it from stealing too much of the iPhone’s thunder, but a comprehensive list of features - 8GB memory, five megapixel camera, quad-band GSM support for world calling and Wi-fi connectivity are just a few - mean that it has amassed an ardent following. In short, the perfect pick-me-up for New Year blues.
