Some people collect stamps. Other people collect coins. Personally, I still collect baseball cards. A more expensive collector’s item is classic cars, and a public radio station in Chicago hopes there’s a collector for a car they have for sale.

WBEZ-FM, Chicago’s National Public Radio affiliate, is selling a 1979 Fiat Spider convertible to help raise money for the station.

Joe Wiesenfelder, Cars.com senior editor, originally bought the car from Tom Magliozzi, co-host of NPR’s “Car Talk” program, and drove it from Cambridge, Massachusetts to his home in Chicago. During the trip, Wiesenfelder called in to the show to report the progress of his journey.

Wiesenfelder donated the Fiat through Car Talk’s Vehicle Donation Program to help raise money for the local NPR station. The car is being auctioned on Cars.com from now until September 12.

“Joe Wiesenfelder’s generosity and that old Fiat are symbols of the eternal hope of the public radio community,” said Daniel Ash, WBEZ’s vice president of strategic communications. “WBEZ is deeply grateful for the thousands of Car Talk fans who help power public radio. It’s gestures such as this one that make our brand of media truly unique.”

Magliozzi was briefly speechless when he heard about the auction because he didn’t know the car had made the trip.

The Fiat Spider was first introduced in 1967 and U.S. production stopped in 1982. There has been a strong following of these cars due to the existence of Fiat Lancia Unlimited, the largest and most active Fiat and Lancia enthusiast group in North America.

If you’re interested in purchasing the car, you can go to Cars.com or visit the website for Magliozzi’s NPR program, “Car Talk”.
