Graham Thompson is owner of Chicago-based company Optimo Fine Hats and has provided hats for blockbuster films that include Public Enemies, as well as actor Andy Garcia and other celebrity clients. While entertainers regularly don fedoras and porkpies, he says the once-standard hat is slowly re-emerging among businessmen. From Stetsons to bowlers, hats are hot... Why are more business men wearing formal hats? They're finally figuring out that wearing a nice suit and top coat with a baseball or ski cap makes them look weird. As people dress better a nice hat is essential, especially in cooler weather. Some are choosing updated fedoras with interesting coloured ribbons. Our Montecristi Panama or Milan straw hats are good for summer wear, too. What other trends do you see? Customers are becoming more adventurous. They're getting away from poorly-made hats and going for more style, detailing and roll to the brim ó which are getting shorter and more tailored like suits. Oversized 1930s French caps are a popular hat we'll offer this fall. Your business, formerly owned by mentor Johnny Tyus, goes back to the1930s and updates original patterns. What makes the1930s/40s-era special for hats? It's the integrity of the hat's architecture, the strong lines and roll of the brim. So many hats are made poorly these days and my focus is on refinement and using the best materials. Any advice on choosing a hat? You've got to feel comfortable and it needs to reflect your personality. For the full interview, visit www.execdigital.co.uk
