Christian Louboutin Tattoos Your Shoes

Christian Louboutin has launched a new bespoke service, offering clients personalized shoe embroidery. The designer’s love for tattooing inspired the new service, which will allow clients to create their own wonderful designs with the help of a Christian Louboutin stylist. Initially, the service will be available in Paris, London, New York and Los Angeles from bespoke male boutiques or ‘tattoo parlors’.

In a press statement, Christian Louboutin said the inspiration behind the service started as an idea for a present for a friend.

“I made a pair of shoes for him embroidered with his tattoo. A lot of my friends have tattoos; I realized that it's not only just a part of pop culture but a bit of a map on someone's body, which says something about people. A part of their life, like an armor or a crest. Instead of carrying someone else's crest on a loafer, I thought it would be a modern armor — your own crest on your own shoe.”

Clients will be able to choose from a range of men’s styles, from the Louis sneaker to the elegant Henri loafer and the newly introduced The Nigel, while the customization on ladies’ shoes will be available in a choice of four classic styles: the Rollergirl flat, the Louis sneaker, the elegant Belle Ankle boot, and the Highness pump.

As part of the service, the client will be able to choose from a selection of fabrications and a diverse color palette, as well as three different embroidery techniques, Outline and Shine, a technique which uses a black and silver thread; Color, using a dynamic colored thread; and Color and Relief, using vibrant colored thread as well as fine bead work.

Requiring three months from the day of order to the finished product, the shoes will travel through the hands of artisans in Italy and India before finding their way to their owner’s feet. The price for the bespoke ‘tattoos’? Between $1,435 and €5,420.

Forget Mukluks and Ugg Boots, these beauties are the ONLY way to keep your perfectly manicured tootsies warm this season. When Sherpa Tensing Norgay took his final steps to the top of Everest on May 29th 1953, he was wearing a pair of Bally Reindeer-Himalaya boots, so this year, 60 years on, Bally has recreated a gorgeous pair of reindeer fur boots as a nod to the brand's link with the momentous adventure. We are not saying you have to scale Everest to warrant purchasing these stunning boots though, a week in Val d’Isère enjoying the après ski will do.

“I only hit the slopes in Chanel darling, and I’m not just talking about No. 5”. If you truly want to ski in style this winter, these beautiful rosewood, fiberglass and aluminum parabolic skis with the Chanel signature are a must. Suitable for skiers of all levels, even those with limited experience can look the part - although, if you can barely stand, you may want to get a few weeks on the dry slopes in first… all the gear and no idea is just not a good look! They are pricey, but totally worth it. These are my ‘money no option’ purchase of the season.
Every girl needs a decent pair of sunglasses to hit the slopes in and it’s on the mountain where you can get away with a fab pair of massive shades. Eat your heart out Victoria Beckham wannabes; massive sunglasses are officially acceptable and even cool when you’re on the slopes. My favorites this year are the Chanel Dark Havana’s, which are understated and classic with gorgeous modern detailing on the arms.
When you're packing for a skiing trip, probably the most important item of clothing is the jacket – you will barely take it off – so that is why it's worth splashing out and getting something that is warm, breathable and of course, fashionable. This year, our top pick at Exec Digital is the Bogner Down Jacket Neyla-d in black with a fur-lined hood. It's not cheap at a cool £1,699.00 ($2,760.00) but it’s a classic and can be worn year after year. Go on and treat yourself!
After a long day skiing, there is nothing better than getting out of your heavy ski gear and into lounge pants and a luxury cashmere jumper. At Exec Digital we love the Long Cashmere Sweater in Ash Rose from the White Company. Pair this with luxury cashmere socks and a glass of bubbly and it’s the perfect end to the day.

Louis Vuitton has created a new ad campaign that is the collaboration of photographer and director Inez van Lamsweerde and Vondoodh Matadin. The campaign focuses on the art of travel, and marks Vuitton's first TV advertisement.

The video, an "l'invitation au voyage," features scenes from classic Parisian landmark and museum the Louvre - including a shot of the Mona Lisa herself - and a dramatic connection between two young models. 24-year-old American model Arizona Muse carries a Vuitton Speedy bag as she strolls through the Louvre and flies away in a hot air balloon to the despair of her male model counterpart.

Muse has worked with Isabel Marant and Vogue and has been the face of Yves Saint Laurent. She has been on the covers of French, Russian, Australian, Chinese and American Vogue and on the runways of Fendi and Karl Lagerfeld this year.

Penelope Cruz is the New Face of Loewe

Luxury leather goods company Loewe (low-ay-ve) announced Monday that actress Penelope Cruz has signed a three year contract as the face of the brand. Cruz has worked as a model and figurehead for Lancôme and Mango, and now returns to her Spanish roots, debuting Loewe's Spring/Summer collection in 2013.

Previous Loewe's models include Gisele Bündchen, Kate Moss and Stephanie Seymour. The 38-year-old Cruz has starred in several movies, including Vanilla Sky and Vicki, Cristina, Barcelona - through which she met husband Javier Bardem.

"Loewe is an international brand proud of its Spanish roots and with a rich history," Cruz said in a statement to Vogue.com. "Its collections are made by Spanish master artisans and I have always admired their work. I feel fortunate to be a part of this project."

Loewe traces its heritage to 1846, making it one of the oldest luxury leather makers in Spain and the world. The company says its craftsmanship can be traced back to the 8th Century, when Spanish Cordoba leather was used by heads of Europe. Loewe was acquired in 1997 by LVMH, which pushed the international expansion of the brand, which specializes in leather bags and garments, suede garments, small leather goods and silk scarves and ties. LVMH (Moet Hennessy and Louis Vuitton) also owns a variety of wine, spirit, perfume, jewelry and fashion brands as well, including Parfums Givenchy, Tag Heuer, Cheval Blanc and Dom Perignon.

Loewe has also recently acquired architect Peter Marino to redesign Loewe retail stores, starting with the Marques de Dos Aguas store in Valencia, Spain. Creative director Stuart Vevers focuses on functional yet luxurious leathers and apparel.

Garbage people have long had a bad rap amongst the world’ s fashionable elite. Dirt and glamor do not run in the same cocktail party circles. Many stylish debutantes have rolled their eyes at Homeless Hannah in her recycled blanket and Doritos bag jacket, as she wheels her garbage cart into the gala.

“Eew” you may say, “yuck, clothing made from garbage is so disgusting, so disturbing, so inhumane. I would much rather by new clothing made from synthetic materials and child exploitation that damages our national economy, degrades the abundance of planet earth, poisons our environment by its inability to decompose and contributes to the massive mountains of hideous garbage that are suffocating our natural landscape.”

“Nothing says glamor like generic, factory made creative complacency,” you say swiping your maxed out Visa.

Attitudes like that are so 1950s commercialism. Get real, get hip, make everyone at the community compost heap 'green' with envy with these rubbage ropa options.

Nancy Judd is a genius innovator who uses trash as the material for couture clothing. She doesn’t see landfills as disgusting, but instead she finds dumps ‘ripe’ with inspiration and scavenges for materials to make into wearable works of recycled art.

When people think of engagement rings and wedding rings, the first thing that comes to mind is the quintessential diamond along with its four C’s: carat, cut, color, and clarity. Well, did it ever occur to anyone that engagement rings can be comprised of other gemstones? There are just so many to choose from. My stepmother was given a very deep sapphire set in a white gold band from my father because he knew how much she loves her September birthstone. My best friend Crystal, given the no frills person that she is, opted for a pearl on her engagement ring. And for myself, well I prefer a rose gold band, complete with a moissanite stone. What’s moissanite? I’m glad you asked. Moissanite is a gemstone that is coming into its own mirroring that of a real diamond with its flawlessness and beautiful brilliance. Oh, and did I mention it comes from a meteorite? Take note gentlemen, this gemstone is another great way to remind your lady that she really is the star of your universe.

	Moissanite in the Rough

That’s right, I said meteorite. According to Diamondsuck.com, Moissanite, holding the chemical name of Silicon Carbide, is a rare gemstone that is typically found in very small quantities in meteorites, corundum deposits, and kimberlite. Looking at it with your naked eye, moissanite does hold similar qualities to the diamond in that it is transparent, extremely hard (9.25 on the Mohs scale, compared to 10 for diamond), and has a high index of refraction (2.65 - 2.69, compared to 2.42 for diamond). When a large rough moissanite sample is cut and polished, the end result is a very bright, brilliant, transparent gemstone that is almost indistinguishable from the diamond until you notice the scintillation of many colors that exude from the stone.

“It’s an acquired taste in jewelry, but people do like some of the styles,” says Cynthia Edwards, Sales Associate at Helzberg Diamonds in Escondido, CA. “I have to explain to [the customers] that it does have carbon in it. It’s born in an incubator.”

Considering I used to sell jewelry, in my opinion moissanite is brighter, more lustrous, and has more fire than a diamond. It radiates extremely beautiful colors when you hold it up to any light, it even sparkles in the shadows.I would sell the heck out of moissanite rings not only because it was my job to make a certain amount of commission for said jewelry store that employed me, but I genuinely believe in the product and stand behind its brilliance and stamina. And, considering you can see these things sparkling in the glass cases from outside the store, these babies practically sell themselves.

“A lot of entertainers wear moissanite. Rapper 50 Cent wears it on stage, so while he’s performing and showing off his ‘bling,’ you’re watching him wear moissanite,” Edwards expresses.

	Moissanite History

Here’s a little bit of background on the moissanite stone. According to moissanitejewelry.com, “The history of natural moissanite can be traced back to the late 1800's and a man who later became a Nobel Prize winner. Dr. Henri Moissan discovered natural silicon carbide while analyzing part of the Diablo Canyon meteorite in 1893. The mineral name for silicon carbide, Moissanite, was given in Dr. Moissan's honor in 1905.

“Natural sources of silicon carbide are rare, and only certain atomic arrangements are useful for gemological applications. Recently, single-crystalline silicon carbide, in certain forms, has been used for the fabrication of high-performance semiconductor devices. North Carolina-based Cree Research, Inc., founded in 1987, has developed a commercial process for producing large single crystals of silicon carbide. Cree is the world leader in the growth of single crystal silicon carbide, mostly for electronics use. Gem quality Moissanite is created exclusively by Charles & Colvard, Inc.”

	Moissanite Value

In my opinion, moissanite stones are so much more desirable than diamonds, but just in case you’re still not convinced, let me break it down so you will find more money in your wallet at the end of the day. You know how some commercials make you feel like scum of the earth because you’re NOT spending three months’ salary on an engagement ring for your <strike>nagging</strike> girlfriend? Not in the moissanite world. Let’s compare and contrast, shall we? Imagine a 1.00-Carat Round, Very Good-cut, I-color, VS1-clarity diamond. According to a diamond grading report from the GIA (Gemological Institute of America), this precious stone is worth $4,565. Now, let’s take a look at a Round 6.5 mm moissanite stone (yes, moissanite is measured in mm, which equals roughly 1.0 carat), certified by Charles & Colvard, retail is $735. Wow!!! According to my calculations, that’s a $3830 difference! Keep in mind though, that’s just for the stone, we’re not including the setting or the band yet.

“Mostly, people do like to wear moissanite when they travel, that way if they lose it, the loss wouldn’t be as much as a diamond,” Edwards explains.

Now I know this article is being published in Exec Digital and let’s be honest, if you’re reading this magazine, you’re not thinking about skimping when it comes to buying jewelry for your beautiful lady. However, think of all the other stuff you can buy for her with the money you saved on buying a moissanite as opposed to a diamond. A new purse, a trip to the Riviera, or more pocket change you can spend on yourself. Hi, remember you? Buy something pretty for yourself, like moissanite cuff links for example. Go crazy!

We know, we know. Just the phrase “man bag,” let alone “murse,” is enough to send chills down any self-respecting executive’s spine in today’s fashion forward business world.

But we get it, too. Just because you aren’t a member of the fairer sex doesn’t mean you don’t have some necessities that make life on-the-go that much more bearable. Your iPad, cell phone, that new proposal for work you’ve been meaning to look over … it all adds up quick, but the question remains: how to carry it all without risking your organization, your fashion sense, and your overall sanity.

Relax! We come bearing good news. Gone are the days of effeminate satchels and overly sporty messenger bags. We’ve gathered the best of the best so take your pick and get ready to reclaim the accessory known as a man bag. Claim it, make it your own and carry it with pride!

Man Bag Revolution - Top Stars Sporting Luxury Murses

Man bags have long had a bad rap with traditional conservatively dressed men. Long considered a luxury accessory reserved only for females, most men shied away from the ultra-useful, organizational, proactive power of a man purse. Most men prefer the junky, aesthetically bulky hulk of lugging their personal items around in their pockets, but anyone who has ever sat on an upright car key knows, sometimes pocket storage is a genuine pain in the bottom.

Today’s executives have a plethora of items they must carry with them everywhere : Blackberrys, keys, wallets, iPads, sunglasses, spectacles, and shoving all those into the super tight skinny jean pockets of today’s fashion trends is as ridiculous as a man bag must have looked to Archie Bunker all those years ago.

However, some of today’s most masculine and ultra stylish male stars are stepping out with man bags slung over their shoulder, and they do not look apologetic one bit for doing so. Could such a trend be the new statement saying ‘I am a male power lion, hear me roar?’ Just check out music moguls Kanye and Pharell whimsically sporting their purses...

Kanye and Pharell and their favorite murses

Even big NBA stars are throwing their sweaty duds into Louis Vuitton murses. ESPN reported Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Pau Gasol are huge fans of luxe bags.

Heaven knows what will come of this trend, but one thing is for sure, if you are going to go murse make sure it is a high-end luxury brand like Fendi, Louis Vuitton or Burberry - and that it is in fact a bag made for men. Masculine bags tend to be more square in shape and structured in tailoring. Such smart shopping will inevitably spare your business mates from thinking you are lugging around your high school gym bag, or your wife's hand-me-down tote.

Louis Vuitton's Handsome Monogram Tourbillion Watch

Louis Vuitton has made an empire off of crafting gorgeous luxury goods for the stylistically elite. Their newest watch is a testament to the timelessly chic sensibilities of the brand, as its gorgeously complicated face looks more like an abstract cubism masterpiece than an everyday wrist watch.

Named the Louis Vuitton’s Tambour Monogram Tourbillion, the watch boasts hands carved from solid gold, and the strap is crafted from the exotic skin of the sea-dwelling stingray. The exterior casing of the watch is no pauper’s pick, it is fashioned out of 18k yellow, pink and white gold. The interior complications of the watch are also blinged out like a chest of pirate’s booty– a sapphire and golden bridge trick out the interior of the watch, as well as a diamond incrusted LV symbol.

The watches wheels were inspired by the designs of antique trunk claps – because everyone knows historical is oh-so-chic baby- and the watch's numerical letters were replaced with the letters L-O-U-I-S-V-U-I-T-T-O-N. It seems the Louis Vuitton brand name perfectly synchs up with their new watch endeavors, as Loui Vuitton, or Louis Vuitto would have been one letter short of a readable time keeper.

Keep that in mind when your tacky friend shows off his or her newest ‘Louis Vuitto’ watch, heaven knows some cheap knock off company is bound to replicate the watch. For those of you interested in buying the real thing in all its glorious authenticity, the watch will be on sale in select Louis Vuitton Flagship stores.

Elite Horologist Wrist Décor: Exec's Top Watches

Watches achieve what no other accessory can. Yes, they can tell the time - but in today’s ultra-tech world plenty of multi-functioning devices can perform that task.

Watches however, are unique in their ability to display wealth, class and prestige with the simple flash of a wrist. No other menswear item can fully convey the wearer’s status, in any environment he may venture. Yes a custom blinged Bugatti Veyron signals extreme wealth, but unfortunately sports cars are usually not permitted into the ballroom of a gala or into the executive boardroom of an important meeting.

In such an occasion, a statement making watch may be your only means of elite identification. When it comes to investing in a high-end watch, the complication, rarity of luxury materials and creative use of tourbillions and components are key factors in determining the indisputable value of this historically-revered accessory.

The following watches uniquely integrate these variables into an exclusively chic aesthetic design. Here are Exec Digital’s picks for the best high-end watches currently on the market.

Harry Winston’s Histoire de Tourbillon 3

The third series in Harry Winston’s exploration of the tourbillion, this edition of the ultra masculine watch utilizes the space commander influence of tourbillions to make a statement that says, ‘Back off, I am the captain of this situation.’

Three tourbillions are encased in the long rectangular case of the timepiece, and they are all set to different rotations that average out to a mega-accurate time reading. Most observers will have no idea as to how that mechanically works, but it looks mighty impressive, as if the wearer has a fleet of mechanical droids helping him gauge every second with accurate discernment.

The watch is made of polished 18k white gold with a satin-brushed case band and is set with 11 sapphires and six citrines. It has a power reserve of fifty hours, and this third series is limited to 20 watches, so it is bound to become a collector’s watch faster than the sweep of its second hand.

Romain Jerome DNA Moon Dust Watch

Nothing says elite earthling like imbuing your personage with the dust of another galactic entity. ‘World Traveler’ is so 2012, ‘Cosmic Traveler’ is all the rage in 2013 and any chic glamophile knows that to make a statement in this world you have to be light-years ahead of your competition.

At 15,000 dollars - the Romain Jermone DNA Moon Dust Watch is the absolute best you can do in terms of owning a watch that is ‘out of this world.’ In addition to containing moon dust, the watch contains the firmament of earth’s orbit, and is also interwoven with carbon fibers from an ISS spacesuit. The watch comes in black, steel and red. Captain Picard would blush with envy.

	Louis Moinet Mecanograph

Louis Moinet’s aesthetics are world renowned. The watches are at once artful, powerful and yet gorgeously refined. The brand’s collaboration with famous tourbillion builder Concepto resulted in one of the luxury brand’s most striking watches yet: the Mecanograph.

Made of 182 different elements, with visible chronometer-worthy precision, this watch is certified by the COSC as a legitimate chronometer. However the most exciting part of this watch is how it changes appearance when viewed from different angles. The balance with screws, the lever and gear trains are highlighted in an original way that is visually distinct from each side of the watch.

The case is made of grade five titanium and polished with a satin-brushed finishing, and the watch starts at approximately 14 thousand dollars. Strikingly unique and artistically relevant, this watch is perfect for the creative executive looking for a watch that blends whimsy and power.

	Aeternitas Mega 4-

Nicknamed, ‘The most complicated wrist watch ever made in the world’ the Aeternitas Mega 4 almost requires a PhD to read the time.

Made of 36 complications, 99 jewels, and 1, 483 components, this watch offers a bevy of signals and time readings including a moon phase indicator, a leap year indicator, a retrograde counter, and a dual time functionality.

The Aeternitas Mega 4 is crafted out of 18 karat white gold, and the strap is hand-sewn alligator leather. For those world-travelers who have a penchant for astronomy, this watch offers fact-tracking capabilities that would make Google jealous.

Hublot’s Oceanographic 4000 King Gold White

Deep sea divers with an elite bank account will go gaga over Hublot’s new Oceanographic wrist watch. The gorgeously designed watch’s case is made of 18k gold and five percent platinum, and is designed to withstand immense pressure; it is even fortified with grade 2 titanium. The superior strength engineering of this watch allows for it to be worn at 4000m below sea level.

The luxury watch company even partnered with the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco to promote the watch as the ‘ultimate watch for the sea.’

Whether deep sea diving or space fantasizing, these watches are guaranteed to wow and inspire, and will serve as the chicest tool around for counting down the minutes to December 25, 2012.

A retro look, is a powerful look. Calling on the powers of historical fashion makes you look like you are learned, and well read, without having to do any actual reading itself. This look is for the artistic risk taker who knows who Orson Wells is, and wants everyone he meets to associate him with someone who knows who Orson Wells is. These glasses were a hit in Oxford during the 30s-50s, and they do call to mind an educated man, with a sense of intellectual purpose.

Diamonds May Not be Forever: Industry Mining Wanes

In a recent report substantiated by DeBeers, the world’s biggest diamond producer, “Experts estimate that all known supplies of diamonds will be depleted within 30 to 40 years.” A recent report in the Times of India, noted a similar conclusion, “The production of rough diamonds around the world has depleted by about 20% at 120 million carats this year.” The depletion in the discovery of diamonds has many experts worried as to the longevity of this long desirable collectable.

Leo Hamel of Leo Hamel Fine Jewelers in San Diego, California is one such expert who is well aware of the situation, however he believes the situation can be interpreted as positive to those looking towards diamonds as a financial investment, “As the world diamond sources are diminishing too quickly to meet long-term demand, consumers may plan to invest in diamonds now before the costs become grossly inflated,” he says.

Hamel believes the window for buying diamonds may be coming to a close soon, "Diamonds have long been considered the height of luxury as adornment for both men and women," says Hamel, “Due to growing demand by consumers in China and India, diamond prices are predicted to skyrocket by 2015. Investors and collectors of this precious stone would do well to buy it soon."

So for those fortunate buyers, who have the money to invest now, this depletion of diamonds coupled with the economic recession could be the perfect environment to invest in the world's most visually pleasing investment.

São Paulo Fashion Week: One of the biggest fashion weeks in the world

It was all different. For many years, quality fashion in Brazil came from the European market. Brazilian magazines used to maketheir fashion editorials based on the international aesthetic. The designers of the time were required to follow trends dictated by the international textile industry. However, there was a need to explore the fashionable Brazilian cultural universe of its own. That's how models, producers, stylists and fashion journalists emerged for a sector on the rise and here comes SPFW – São Paulo Fashion Week.

Regarded as the embryo of what is now one of the biggest fashion weeks in the world, SPFW had its first edition in 1996 - under another name - presenting four shows dailyand an audience of approximately 300 people. Over 15 years later, arriving in 2012 in its 33rd edition, the numbers of the event will not let us lie. In six days of exhibition, there are about 30 shows. There is a public of morethan 100,000 guests standing to cheer over 300 models at the catwalks.

Considering that in the fashion world so many things matter to build a good image, Paulo Borges, Director of SPFW, assumes: “We have always believed that clothing is not fashion. Clothing is a process of fashion. It is one of the elements that fashion embraces. To build a fashion culture is looking at the meaning of creation, inspiration, production, innovation, technology…”

Some factors were crucial in the transition from when it was believed that there was room in Brazil for an organized fashion week, close to what you saw out there. The opening of the internal market - created by the government at the time - for imports, forced the Brazilian entrepreneurs to invest in technology to combat the entry of foreign products, including big brands like Chanel and Versace that arrived in the country in the 90s.

It was also during this period that top models like Gisele Bundchen, Ana Claudia Michels and Isabeli Fontana emerged. Big names in fashion became known in Brazil: Ricardo Almeida, Reinaldo Lourenco and Ronaldo Fraga. Currently, the annual event features two editions: one in January, with the anticipation of the collection of winter, and another in the middle of the year, with summer collections. The investments also grew significantly from US$300,000in 1993, to approximately US$3.5million in the latest editions.

Undoubtedly, SPFW is a milestone in the history of international fashion business. Today, it is the largest and most important fashion event in Latin America and is already considered part of the fashion world, appearing in the circuit of major fashion weeks such as Paris, Milan, London and New York.

The highlights of the last parade of São Paulo Fashion Week Winter 2012 - that happened in January - was marked by shows of major brands such as Animale, Tufi Duek, Cori and Osklen. The launch of the spring and summer of 2012/2013 collections, which just happened in June, brought 32 brands, with massive attention directed to the big international models Candice Swanepoel and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

In January, a survey conducted by the In-Mod - National Institute of Fashion and Design - showed the number of staff involved in producing the event, directly and indirectly. There were almost 11,500 people (in each occasion), among professionals, buyers, journalists and sponsors. The event generates over US$ 250 million of spontaneous media. Also according to the research, the figures showed that 70 percent of designers export their products, mostly to countries like Japan (Tokyo), Middle East (Dubai), Greece, USA and others in Europe.

It is clear how much each edition of SPFW generates news, information, jobs, resources, creativity, and business projects. It is noticeable the progressive production of various forms of those who believe in the disclosure of Brazilian fashion and attest to the high representation ofSão Paulo.

New markets have also been drawing attention, as was the case of Russian and Egyptian journalists covering the event, American and European buyers, and the growth of young talents on the circuit, with recognized potential gains and ideas. Above all, many other initiatives, focused on universal themes with creativity and concern for environmental sustainability, bring even more significant achievements to this mega event.

Overall, it is almost like magic. “There are few creative areas, which may gather and use all this information and inspiration and what is most interesting about it, is that fashion does that twice a year. It makes, creates, states, it dies, it’s born, reborn, reinvented, showing everything again through a new angle,” celebrates Borges.

Hublot: Exclusive timepieces fueled by passion

It seems altogether appropriate that the French “hublot” translates to the English “porthole” since a conversation with Hublot SA Chairman Jean-Claude (JC) Biver provides a clear view of the passion that drives him and makes one of the world’s renowned manufacturers of luxury watches tick.

A symbol of that passion and his boyhood dreams, a working scale-model of a steam engine that Biver built as a child and that his parents recently found and restored, occupies a place of prominence on his desk.

“My passion [for watch making] and the passion of my people are contagious. If you’re close to someone with passion, he will give you also part of his passion,” reasons Biver, 63, who assumed Hublot’s CEO duties in 2004. “Then everyone starts to get passionate. We’ve always said we have to be different. On every project, we say are we first, are we unique and are we different?”

With locations in Geneva, Paris, Berlin, Warsaw and Prague as well as Mauritius, Singapore, Shanghai, Hong Kong and New York, Hublot targets an uber-upscale clientele, crafting approximately 25,000 pieces annually at its manufacturing centre in Nyon. During March’s Baselworld 2012 Show the company unveiled the most expensive watch ever made– a $5 million white gold dazzler laden with 1,282 diamonds sold to The Hour Glass boutiques in Singapore.

	High-profile connections

Hublot is the official watch for Ferrari; the official timekeeper for the FIFA World Cup (2010, 2014) and the Union of European Football Federations (UEFA) Euro 2012 competitions; and is aligned with Formula One racing, Manchester United of the English Premier League, the National Basketball Association’s Miami Heat, the Swiss sailing group Alinghi, the Yacht Club de Monaco and the World Boxing Council.

Among global ambassadors are Prince Albert II of Monaco, Formula One President and CEO Bernie Ecclestone, the family of deceased Formula One legend Ayrton Senna, Olympic and World Champion sprinter Usain Bolt, Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat, FIFA President Sepp Blatter, Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson, Czech super model Veronica Verakova, Chinese actor Jet Li and Argentine football legend Diego Maradona, who has a penchant for wearing watches on both wrists.

“Formula One is an engine. It’s an engine for speed, an engine for emotion, an engine for dreams and an engine for success. A watch is also an engine, an engine for the wrist, an engine for success,” Biver says of the partnership with Formula One. “Basically we are two in the same business. Our engines, like Formula One, are made from new materials, both engines are fantastically performing and both are giving dreams.”

	The Challenge

Reinvigorating a brand that had grown stagnant since being founded in 1980 and transforming it into the chic, highly-visible global player of today was no easy task.

Biver, though, has a history of meeting and conquering challenges. With Jacques Piguet, he bought and re-launched the Blancpain name in 1982 before selling it 10 years later to what would become The Swatch Group (formerly SMH Group). While with Swatch, Biver oversaw the revival of the Omega brand.

So, when Hublot Geneva’s founder Carlo Crocco sought him out in 2004, Biver jumped back into the fray less than a year into a planned sabbatical. In short order he had finalized the “Art of Fusion” concept – melding classic materials with original and, in some cases, rare metals to yield something altogether different – and within a year Hublot launched the iconic Big Bang chronograph that remains its signature piece with 35 models accounting for approximately 70 percent of its annual sales.

	Then and Now

“We were in 2005 like a start-up and we just had the DNA, a watch with the shape of a portal. So, we had a very clear idea and the DNA. Besides that we had nothing – we had to build the company from A to Zed,” recalls Biver, likening the original watch to the Porsche in which 1950s matinee idol James Dean died.

“So if you build a Porsche like the one in which James Dean died, you would sell it as a classic. But, if it was a modern car, no one would like it because it’s out of shape. So we looked at the product of 1980 and we face-lifted the product. We looked at the product and said what would have been the evolution. We made a simulation and we came out with this result,” Biver says, smiling broadly while pointing to the Big Bang enveloping his left wrist.

Biver scrapped everything Hublot was doing, removed quartz batteries from the equation and returned to the time-honored tradition of fine Swiss watch-making.

“We had to employ people with the knowledge of the craft; we had to buy the materials. We said let’s ask every person to work like five and we’ll pay them like two. Today everybody works like three and is paid like two. We have devoted people working like this is a religion,” Biver says.

Given the choice, Biver comes down on the side of research and development over marketing every time.

“It is very simple – no innovation, no future,” Biver says, accentuating the point with a sweeping wave of his right hand. “In whatever business you are in, innovation is the most important part. If I have to choose to spend $10 million in research and development and $10 million in a new marketing strategy I will always take the $10 million in research and development because that gives us our future and that gives us deep, profound and solid substance.”

With substance in place, product marketing becomes exponentially easier.

“Formula One and Ferrari are like cousins and we have the same consumer, we talk to the same people. It’s always better if we are two people to make an effort to talk to the consumer than just one alone,” Biver reasons.

As part of the company’s succession plan, Ricardo Guadalupe became Hublot’s CEO in January of this year. But Biver isn’t planning on retiring any time soon and remains the force driving the company.

“Passion, passion, passion – if you have passion for your work, then you never had the impression that you’re working. You only have the impression you’re working when your passion is what you’re doing in your free time. When you’re passionate about your work, you never say ‘I have to go back to work on Monday,’” he concludes.

Tom Fords' Fall 2012 Men's Collection: Exec's Favorite Looks

Tom Ford is a favorite here at Exec, because personally, we don’t think anyone does designer menswear better. His lines are impeccable, his fabrics are handsome, and there is always something powerful and yet exciting in his tailoring. He brought class to Gucci, creativity to Yves Saint Laurent and everything on the spectrum to his own line: Tom Ford.

His Fall 2012 Look book for Menswear is bound to please the most stylistically empowered executives, as bold but surprising fabrics and nostalgic lines are utilized in engaging and innovative ways.

Here are our favorite looks from his collection.

	These suits.

The classic cut of the trousers and jackets take charge but in a refined way. I am thrilled to see a tailored men’s pant that isn’t skinnier than an Olsen’s legging. The use of the bowtie is done to perfection, and manages to escape looking penguin-esque because Ford contrasts the traditional accessory with wildly fresh fabrics on the jacket. The metallic sheen and glaze of these jackets remind me of wet streets on a rainy New York Autumn night. I can feel Ford’s inspiration just looking at them.

	This overcoat, and that blazer.

I love the color of the blazer on the right, and how it is paired with traditional fittings such as tailored slacks and a bowtie. I also like the overcoat on the left. The wide lapel and generous use of fabric makes the wear looker buffer than he really is. However, either that scarf makes the model appear to – or he actually is – wearing a cummerbund, and that frightens the life out of me.

Which brings me to my next point- my least favorite pieces in Ford's collection.

	Everything featured here.

The fabric on that coat on the right looks like linoleum out of a 1950's mental ward. The plaid is too exaggerated, especially in a society already bloated with excess. Those pants on the right are only fit for a community theater version of Riverdance. I get static cling just looking at them. And the suit in the middle looks like grandpa pajamas. I can smell the moth balls from here.

Cartier took over five years developing their newest watch, and it shows. In terms of streamlining precision while still maintaining efficiency, it is the most cutting-edge watch ever developed. The luxury watch brand, which has served French royalty and major celebrities for decades, has also made great strides in envisioning the future of watchmaking through their division ‘Ideas + Development.’ The Cartier ID Two definitely encompasses this futurist vision in exciting and stylistically profound ways.

Utilizing a power reserve that lasts over thirty days – 32 at its best – the watch's main spring is made from fiber glass, a revolutionary breakthrough in the watch making industry. Shucking off traditional metal alloys is not the only innovative move on this watch's behalf, the watch also has planetary escapements which retain energy better, and transfer the power in the watch more efficiently.

The superior materials used in this watch, call for no lubricants in its making, which ultimately will make the watch last longer than any other timepiece, and will require less adjustments to stay ticking precisely. The watch’s movement is also encapsulated in a clear case, making it look both powerful and sporty. This case is made of clear ceramic and vacuum sealed, so no screws were utilized in the design.

While the watch is currently just a concept watch, it indicates the future of watch-making, and will be launched at the upcoming Salon International de Haute Horlogerie in Geneva.

Tom Ford to Debut London Store

Sloane Street has a new resident that is bound to up the stylish avenue to new supreme stylistic heights. The London street already calls such famous designers as Alberta Ferreti, Chanel, Gucci and Louis Vuitton its own – and Tom Ford the legend is set to join those ranks.

Ford is famous for reviving Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent as major couture powerhouses before going on to form his own label aptly named Tom Ford. He has also garnered acclaim as a movie director for his pic A Single Man which starred Oscar winner Colin Firth.

This will be Ford’s second store, his first store was opened in Paris earlier this year.

Hugh Seaborn, Chief Executive at The Cadogan Estate, remarked about Ford’s new store: “We are delighted to have secured such a big name fashion brand as the anchor to 201-206 Sloane Street.

“With Tom Ford’s arrival – and Alberta Ferretti also opening a flagship store, it enhances the ‘super luxury’ offering of the development and seals its reputation as a world-class fashion destination.”

The store is a smart move as it physically aligns Ford to his targeted demographic. It is a great first step in a career that is bound to change the face of menswear through sheer chic innovation.
