The stars of haute cuisine

DANIEL 60 EAST 65TH STREET, NEW YORK MICHELIN STARS: ***

DANIEL 60 EAST 65TH STREET, NEW YORK MICHELIN STARS: *** Daniel Boulud specializes in contemporary French cuisine of the highest order. His menu at DANIEL is inspired by “the rhythm of the seasons”. Situated in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, the restaurant underwent quite a transformation in summer 2008. Its renovation brought the interior up to date – an interior that is dominated by neo-classical architecture. The luxurious dining area and elegant bar and lounge are the perfect setting in which to savor the exquisitely presented dishes. Executive Chef Jean Francois Bruel is an expert at fusing French techniques with American ingredients and flavors. But he also works with food from further afield, as demonstrated by DANIEL’s woodfire grilled Yellowfin tuna with Hawaiin hearts of palm and red kuri squash. The desserts are well-balanced, and divided into fruit and chocolate. To accompany the menu, Head Sommelier Rajeev Vaidya has produced a wine list that can boast over 1,500 selections, ranging in price from $30 upwards. Prices: Three course prix fixe $105 For reservations Visit: www.danielnyc.com/daniel
HIBISCUS 29 MADDOX STREET, LONDON MICHELIN STARS: ** Claude Bosi’s Hibiscus only recently made its home in London, having been located in Ludlow, Shropshire up until 2007. The restaurant is more than a welcome addition to the city though. Bosi has held two Michelin stars since 2004, and it is no wonder, coming from a background that saw him trained by some of France’s greatest chefs – Alain Passard, Alain Ducasse and Jean-Paul Lacombe no less. Hibiscus’ unusual flavor combinations have received high acclaim, and are complemented by the restaurant’s subtle interiors. Try the suckling pig in two services from the à la carte menu; roast loin is followed by a warm sausage roll that has had rave reviews. Meanwhile, the Hibiscus ‘Tarte au Chocolat’ is fast making a name for itself. With Head Chef Marcus McGuinness cooking up a storm in the kitchen, and Bosi’s wife Claire providing a superior level of service front of house, Hibiscus is one of the best places to dine in London. Prices: A La Carte – three courses for £70.00. For reservations CALL: +44 (0)20 7629 2999 www.hibiscusrestaurant.co.uk
Plaza Athénéé 25 AVENUE MONTAIGNE, PARIS MICHELIN STARS: *** Eating at the Alain Ducasse Restaurant at Plaza Athénéé in Paris is an experience to be savored. The opulent surroundings, designed by Patrick Jouin, are awe inspiring; chandeliers comprising 10,000 crystal pendants adorn the dining area. Ducasse and Chef Christophe Moret have been working together for over 10 years. Such a longstanding partnership has seen them create a distinctive menu at the Plaza Athénéé, which has garnered three Michelin stars. The modern, authentic French cuisine places the emphasis on the flavors of the ingredients creating, in Ducasse’s words, a “Parisian symphony”. The steamed langoustines with Beluga caviar are a house specialty, while other exquisite dishes include wild hare from Picardie and Brittany turbot with clams and cockles. The desserts are equally stunning – indulge in the Belle-Hélène pear, or the contemporary vacherin. Gérard Margeon and Laurent Roucayrol’s wine list of 1001 labels complements the gourmet menu. Prices: Three dishes from the Winter Collection for €360, or three dished from ‘Pleasures of the Table’ for €260. Desserts €32.
