If your company is involved in social media, online marketing, or anything to do with the digital world, then Mashable.com has become your best friend, savior, and godsend.
Mashable, established in 2005, is the leading source for…get ready, “news in social and digital media, technology and web culture…reporting breaking web news, providing analysis of trends, reviewing new websites and services, and offering social media resources and guides,” according to their website.
Their audience streams across every industry, from entrepreneurs and corporations to PR and advertising agencies, boasting more than 30 million pageviews a month. For those of you familiar with online analytics, that’s a kind of a big deal!
In 2009, Exec Digital had the opportunity to interview Pete Cashmore, Mashable’s Founder & CEO. Boyish charm aside, it was Cashmore’s aptitude and determination, along with 20-hour work days, that led to Mashable. He launched the website in the small town of Aberdeen in his native Scotland at the age of 19. Yeah, we were doing big things too when we were 19!
The site quickly grew to be one of Technorati’s Top 10 blogs in the world and was chosen as a Must-Read by Fast Company and PC Magazine. As for Cashmore, he’s collected a few accolades himself. Forbes magazine has consistently named him a Web Celeb, Inc. Magazine was gracious enough to include him in their 30 Under 30 and he’s among the top 40 most-followed Twitter users, just shy of 2 million.

Because they’re one of the most recognized names on the web, it only made sense for Mashable to launch an annual competition to honor social media and technology innovators and trendsetters. Competitors have 24 categories to choose from such as Breakthrough Website Design, Most Creative Social Media Campaign and Best Mobile Device.
The Mashable Awards began in 2007 (then the Open Web Awards) with 500 attendees, accrued 250,000 international votes, and celebrated Web 2.0 junkies from Pandora, YouTube and Last.fm, to name a few.
This year’s competition and runners-up (including yours truly!) have proven to be fierce as fingers are ferociously clicking to become nominated by the November 26, 2010 deadline.
Cirque du Soleil’s Zumanity will host the Mashable Awards Gala on January 6, 2011 in the one and only, Sin City. What happens in Vegas won’t be staying there though, as the event will be streaming live for all Mashable fans to see.
Stayed tuned, Exec Digital will report back as the award ceremony creeps up!
